It took the better part of three quarters to kick the sand from Cabo out of their sneakers, but the Jazz couldn't have asked for much better coming back from the All-Star break than their 117-99 victory Tuesday night over the Memphis Grizzlies.
The Jazz welcomed back Andrei Kirilenko only 18 days after he underwent ankle surgery, watched Mehmet Okur head home sick from the pregame shootaround, and still pulled away in the fourth quarter to sweep the season series against Memphis. Kirilenko returned with 14 points in 18 minutes as the Jazz tuned up for Thursday's showdown against the defending champion Boston Celtics with five players scoring in double figures and contributions from top to bottom.
Deron Williams had 20 points and 15 assists, though his streak of consecutive 30-point scoring games came to an end at five. C.J. Miles scored a game-high 24 points and Paul Millsap overcame early foul trouble to total 18 points, eight rebounds and four blocks.
"It's tough to get your legs back after one game and one practice," Williams admitted. "I was a little shaky out there, I couldn't really get that extra speed burst."
Jarron Collins started in place of Okur, who was suffering from the flu, and finished with eight points and seven rebounds in 24 minutes. Collins did all his scoring in the third quarter, even hitting a pair of jumpers.
Even Brevin Knight got in on the act, hitting a 10-footer with 35.7 seconds left in the third quarter. It ended a streak of 20 consecutive missed shots for Knight dating to the Jazz's Jan. 20 victory over Minnesota.
The Jazz had 11 players score and made 32 of 33 free throws, including two by Kyrylo Fesenko with 24.3 seconds left. Fesenko had been 3-for-13 at the line this season before Tuesday. He now is 7-for-19 in his two-year career.
"I knew that you would come to me," Fesenko said, laughing, as a reporter approached his locker afterward.
The Jazz now have beaten the Grizzlies the last nine times they've played -- their longest winning streak against any NBA team -- but Tuesday's game was a roller-coaster ride, perhaps to be expected.
Kirilenko checked in to loud cheers when he entered with 4:21 left in the first quarter. He promptly drove on Hakim Warrick and earned a trip to the foul line as the Jazz built a 10-point lead as part of a 33-point first quarter.
"The ankle doesn't bother me," Kirilenko said. "Right now, it's more about getting in shape, getting in Basketball shape, and getting more and more minutes in the game."
The Jazz gave up the first 10 points of the second quarter and watched Millsap head to the bench with his third foul with 7:38 left in the half. They went into halftime tied 56-56 as Ronnie Brewer (19 points) and Williams hit back-to-back three-pointers.
Even a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter wasn't safe as Mike Conley hit a three-pointer and scored as part of a three-point play after Collins had a pass stolen and fouled Conley giving chase on the break.
The Grizzlies twice closed within four, but the Jazz answered with an 11-0 run. Kirilenko sat the entire third quarter after playing 11 minutes in the first half, but got open for a reverse layup out of a timeout, then stripped Conley and raced the other way for a dunk.
"That's something that we've missed from him," said Jazz coach Jerry Sloan, whose team has gone 6-9 without Kirilenko this season.
With the victory, the Jazz (31-23) closed within one game of seventh-place Dallas, though they remain just a game ahead of ninth-place Phoenix, which scored 81 points and shot 75.6 percent in the first half in demolishing the L.A. Clippers 140-100.
Even so, the Jazz moved a step closer to being at full strength for the first time this season with Kirilenko's return after missing the last 11 games.
"I think we got more than expected," Williams said. "He looked great yesterday in practice. He looked like he hadn't missed any time at all. It was fresh legs. He played great tonight, offensively, defensively. He was his energetic self as usual and definitely added to our team."
