INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Shorthanded most of the season, the Spurs' defense doesn't rank in the top five statistically like it usually does. San Antonio is allowing 93.1 points and 45-percent shooting per game. But through 12 games, Mason Jr. has been a pleasant surprise. He's averaging 15.2 points and shooting a team-best 50.8 percent (32-of-63) from 3-point range. Meanwhile, the Grizzlies' rookies are running hot and cold. Gasol is averaging 14.5 points and 5.3 rebounds on 61-percent shooting in the last six games while Mayo is averaging 17.7 points but shooting 34 percent in his last three.
THE SKINNY
Memphis is 12-39 all time against San Antonio with the Spurs winning 10 of the last 12. Bowen was back in the Spurs' starting lineup last Friday night after making six consecutive appearances off the bench. Bowen had started 555 games in a Spurs uniform before moving to the bench for a Nov. 11 game against New York. Spurs point guard Tony Parker (left ankle sprain) is out. The mystery centers on Manu Ginobili, who has declared himself ready to make his season debut after recovering from offseason ankle surgery. "I don't know if they are going to wait and be extra-cautious and see how I develop. But I feel like I can contribute, little by little. I'm not going to play 35 minutes the first game, but I think I'm ready to start helping out." Spurs coach Gregg Popovich wasn't convinced and was a bit vague about Ginobili's status, saying Friday: "When he's ready, that's when he's going to play. He's not ready yet."
