Jazz-Grizzlies Preview
The Utah Jazz have done an admirable job playing without their star point guard for most of the first three weeks of the season. It looks like similar success could be hard to come by with their leading scorer and rebounder also sidelined.

After Utah lost its first game without Carlos Boozer, the All-Star power forward is expected to again join Deron Williams on the sideline as the Jazz visit the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday night.

Utah (8-5) has gotten off to a solid start this season despite a severe injury to Williams' left ankle. The fourth-year point guard, who averaged career highs of 18.8 points and 10.5 assists last season, missed the first six games before returning to play two last week. He said his ankle still didn't feel right, and has missed Utah's last five contests.

Even without their offensive leader, the Jazz are tied with Portland and Denver atop the Northwest Division. They couldn't, however, overcome the absences of both Williams and Boozer on Friday night, falling 119-94 to San Antonio.

Boozer missed the game with a left quadriceps strain he suffered in Wednesday night's win over Milwaukee. He doesn't expect to be able to return Saturday.

"I'm feeling all right, but I think I won't play the next game either," said Boozer, averaging 20.5 points and 11.7 rebounds while shooting 55.9 percent from the field. "We just don't want to take any chances."

Without Williams and Boozer, the Jazz gave up a season-high point total against a Spurs team that entered the game averaging only 90.4 points.

Utah was also missing Jarron Collins (inflamed right elbow) and Kyle Korver (inflamed right wrist), but coach Jerry Sloan again refused to use injuries as an excuse.

"That doesn't make any difference," said Sloan, whose club has dropped four straight on the road. "These other guys get paid on the first and the 15th to compete, and I never saw that."

Sloan hopes to see more effort against Memphis, which was held to its lowest point total since its season opener in a 91-76 loss at Dallas on Friday night. The Grizzlies (4-8) went 6-for-27 from the field in getting outscored 24-15 in the third quarter, and shot 37.3 percent overall.

"I think we were forcing it a little too much," said forward Rudy Gay, who went 5-for-19 and is shooting 40.8 percent this season after connecting on 46.2 percent of his shots in 2007-08.

In his third NBA season, Gay is Memphis' most experienced starter. Second-year point guard Mike Conley and rookies O.J. Mayo, Marc Gasol and Darrell Arthur round out the starting five for the young Grizzlies, who have lost five of six and anticipate more growing pains as the season continues.

Memphis, though, hopes to take advantage of Utah's injury woes and end the Jazz's recent dominance in the series. The Grizzlies have lost their last five games against the Jazz, including three meetings last season by an average of 21.4 points.

That dominance was largely due to Williams and Boozer, who combined to average 39.0 points, 11.7 rebounds and 17.3 assists in the series.

Gay averaged 17.7 points against the Jazz, but shot just 39.5 percent.
