Allen Iverson finally got on the court Monday night for the Grizzlies, and he wasn't shy about looking for his shot in a 127-118 overtime loss at Sacramento. The 10-time All-Star guard, who missed every exhibition game and the first three games of the regular season while recovering from a partially torn hamstring, played 17:39, scoring 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including a 3-pointer. Iverson looked a bit rusty in the first half, but he was in the flow during his second rotation in the second half when he hit a 3-pointer.
He had been eager to get back into action, but Grizzlies majority owner Michael Heisley ordered the team's training staff to keep Iverson sidelined until they were convinced the 34-year-old is completely healed.
Heisley said he doesn't want to rush Iverson back only to have the hamstring injury linger throughout the season.
"I looked (Iverson) in the eyes and told him I'm the one who's responsible for you not playing," Heisley said. "I told him I'm going to give him every opportunity to show that he can still play at a high level, and he can't do that if he's in and out of the lineup."
Iverson was ready to play when he took the court at Arco Arena.
"In this league everybody pretty much runs the same thing, so I know what's going on," Iverson said when asked if he knew the Grizzlies' offensive sets. "They're all the same sets with different names and colors on the plays."
KINGS 127, GRIZZLIES 118 (OT): Despite a superb performance from Zach Randolph, the Grizzlies lost the second game of a back-to-back schedule.
Randolph finished with 30 points and 16 rebounds but fouled out with 3:19 left in overtime. The Grizzlies came flying out of the gate with a 14-point lead during the first quarter but were no match for the Kings' 3-point shooting.
Sacramento went 14-for-25 in 3's, including seven by Kevin Martin to key his 48-point performance. Besides Allen Iverson, who had 11 points, the Grizzlies got little help from the bench (67-14 bench domination by the Kings) in a game that had 29 lead changes and 18 ties.
