It just keeps getting worse for the Grizzlies: --They go 0-5 on the West Coast trip. --Free agent Allen Iverson leaves the team and is thinking about retirement.
--Legendary center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who had been considering a job with the Grizzlies tutoring their young centers, announces he's fighting a rare form of leukemia.
--Finally, in Tuesday's home loss to Portland, Grizzlies center Hasheem Thabeet, the No. 2 overall pick in last year's draft, sustained a fractured jaw late in the first quarter.
Thabeet, playing in his seventh game of the season, was injured when his jaw banged teammate Zach Randolph's head. So far, he has been largely ineffective: four points, 11 rebounds and six blocked shots in seven games.
BLAZERS 93, GRIZZLIES 79: Unselfishness and ball movement got the Grizzlies a 45-45 halftime tie with the Blazers. One-on-one basketball and standing around in the second half produced 34 second-half points and a sixth straight loss. The Grizzlies' 16-point third quarter tied their lowest quarter output of the young season.
