The Grizzlies aren't just being rebuilt. They are being blown up.
Consider that the oldest player on the squad is three-year vet Hakim Warrick. Or that only three current players were on the roster two years ago. Second-year general manager Chris Wallace is comfortable with his plan to eventually raise the Grizzlies back to playoff-level status. That plan included trading the last two mainstays of the Grizzlies' three playoff teams, Pau Gasol to the Lakers last season and Mike Miller to the Timberwolves just a few weeks ago.
"By (last) January, I just felt that by January we'd reached our peak and we needed to go into another direction," Wallace said. "Moving Pau (Gasol) brought back a number of assets and also got us off a very large contract that would have made flexibility difficult to achieve in the future.
"I've been very comfortable about the trade from the moment we did it. I'm comfortable with the assets we got back. By my math, it's four first-round picks. I consider Marc Gasol a first-round pick. And we've got tons of cap room over the next few years."
The Grizzlies made some draft night trades to swap draft choices and bring O.J. Mayo and Darrell Arthur into the fold. Both were impressive in the NBA Summer League. He signed Marc Gasol as a free agent.
"We've added three talented players in Marc Gasol, O.J. Mayo and Darrell Arthur and we've got some outstanding talent already on the roster," Wallace said. "I think we have one of the best collections of young talent in the NBA."
