--F Rudy Gay did not play in the Oct. 21 exhibition game because of a staph infection in his leg. The team would not release any other details.
--Point guard Mike Conley went back to Ohio State this past summer. When he wasn't in class, he was in a gym. After a weight workout, it was nothing but shooting, shooting and more shooting.
"My goal was to be ready to knock down open shots consistently, and when I drive I want to finish better," Conley said. "Last year, I was told I need to be more aggressive. I didn't shoot the ball bad. I just have to be able to shoot the right shot, the open shot. Now I feel like a whole different player than last year."
Conley shot 44 percent from three-point range in the NBA Summer League.
--At 6-9 and 219 pounds, Hakim Warrick has a body more suited to a small forward. But as he proved last year after Pau Gasol got traded, he's ready to be the Grizzlies' starting power forward.
His goal every day is to improve his two areas of weakness -- defense and rebounding -- that gives Grizzlies coach Marc Iavaroni some doubts about Warrick.
"I have to go out there and show I can rebound," Warrick said. "Coach knows he can count on me for scoring. So rebounding is something I want to focus on. I want to show him I can defend and rebound consistently."
MAIN REASON GRIZZLIES CAN WIN: Mike Conley is a blur running the break, and with O.J. Mayo now in the fold, he's got people to fill both wings.
The athleticism of Conley, Mayo, Rudy Gay and Hakim Warrick is impressive. When this team runs and shares the ball, it lights up the scoreboard.
MAIN REASON GRIZZLIES CAN LOSE: Still gets shoved around on the inside too much. Darko Milicic continues to play with little confidence and rookie Marc Gasol wants to play physical, but has a Pillsbury Doughboy body. Also, all the young talent still has a tendency to play one-on-one too much, and without the ball movement, the Grizzlies get smothered by good defensive teams.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "We're not worried about our offense. We've got more people capable of getting in the lane and creating for other people. There are going to be nights when we're unstoppable." -- Grizzlies F Rudy Gay, on the Grizzlies' expanded arsenal of offensive weapons.
