Memphis Grizzlies Notes, Quotes 2008-10-24
--Rookie G O.J. Mayo has opened eyes at different times in the preseason, such as his performance going against the Heat's Dwyane Wade on Tuesday.

Mayo finished with 28 points, five assists, five rebounds and two steals.

"He can get better," Iavaroni said of Mayo. "Defensively, he has his hands full. I think he can cut his turnovers down."

--F Darrell Arthur, the Grizzlies' other first round draft choice, has come on strong after a hamstring problem early in training camp. He closed out preseason play with 18 points, three rebounds and a blocked shot in 21 minutes against Orlando on Wednesday.

"I'm going to show people I can play and that I'm supposed to be here," Arthur said. "I like being in the background and just doing what I have to do on the court. Coach told me to run the floor and I can stay out there. I've got those young legs. I think I can beat people down the court."

--G Jarvis Crittenton is the Memphis player mostly likely to be traded. The second-year guard likely won't see much playing time at what is a crowded position behind O.J. Mayo.

"I don't see Javaris Crittenton as a backup point guard," coach Marc Iavaroni said. "We have two point guards, and Marko Jaric is capable and can play point guard."

As for possible trades, Iavaroni said: "We're always interested in improving our team. If we found a situation that would help us, we'd look at it."

MAIN REASON GRIZZLIES CAN WIN: G Mike Conley is a blur running the break, and with G O.J. Mayo now in the fold, he's got people to fill both wings. The athleticism of Conley, Mayo, Rudy Gay and Hakim Warrick is impressive. When this team runs and shares the ball, it lights up the scoreboard.

MAIN REASON GRIZZLIES CAN LOSE: This team still gets shoved around on the inside too much. C Darko Milicic continues to play with little confidence and rookie C Marc Gasol wants to play physical, but has a Pillsbury Doughboy body. Also, all the young talent still has a tendency to play one-on-one too much, and without the ball movement, the Grizzlies get smothered by good defensive teams.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "It was like the stock market. It was up and down. It's mostly down right now. It's not looking too good. But we have a lot of days of practice to turn it around." -- F Hakim Warrick on the Grizzlies' preseason play.
