Memphis Grizzlies Roster Report 2009-07-25
DRAFT PICKS:

Hasheem Thabeet, C, 7-3, Connecticut (first round) -- Blocked 417 shots in three seasons at UConn. Still raw offensively, but can do enough on the offensive boards to contribute points to the lineup.

DeMarre Carroll, F, 6-8, Missouri (first round) -- Averaged 16.6 points as a first-team All-Big 12 selection. A sheer blood, guts and sweat guy who simply outworks a lot of his opponents.

Sam Young, F, 6-7, Pittsburgh (second round) -- Could be underrated second round steal. Not only played in a a school-record 143 consecutive games and finished as Pitt's fourth all-time leading scorer (1,884 points), but can score inside and out.

PLAYER NEWS:

--G Marcus Williams was a surprise in the Las Vegas Summer League. The Grizzlies had been in the mix for Allen Iverson, who has viewed the Grizzlies as a last option.

But they may sign Williams, who not only would be a solid backup point guard, he also could give starter Mike Conley a run for his job. Williams averaged 13.4 points and 8.2 assists in Vegas.

"Marcus certainly opened a lot of eyes," Grizzlies GM Chris Wallace said, "He's a very high-level passer of the ball. He can get players easy baskets, not just in the half-court, but on the break. He also scores enough to keep defenses honest."

--F Darrell Arthur, who finished the 2008-09 season averaging 5.6 points and 4.6 rebounds in 76 appearances, seems to have gotten his high-energy mojo back in the Las Vegas Summer League.

Last year as a rookie, he started 64 times, but averaged just 19.3 minutes per game. His inconsistency knocked him back in the playing rotation. He looked physically and mentally exhausted.

So the Grizzlies management told the 6-9 forward at season's end he needed to get away from basketball for a while. Arthur went to Maui for two weeks and came back a new player.

"This was the first time I got away from basketball, and I needed to," Arthur said. "Coach (Lionel Hollins) told me to go home and relax, and just work on slowing down. When I came back, I was ready to work.

"They (the Grizzlies' coaches) want me to be that energy guy and I'm OK with that. Things are better for me because I know what to expect. Last year, I was rushing everything on defense and offense. It was a roller coaster, but I learned a lot."

MEDICAL WATCH:

No injuries to report.
