DRAFT PICKS:
O.J. Mayo, G, 6-5, USC -- Averaged 20.7 for the Trojans, earning first-team All-Pac 10 honors. Didn't quite live up to the hype he had in high school, yet his explosiveness and shooting range make experts believe he could be a potential all-star. Obtained in trade from Minnesota (as the No. 3 overall pick), who took the Grizzlies' pick at No. 4, Kevin Love from UCLA. Darrell Arthur, 6-9, F, Kansas -- Excellent mid-range player who has a nice mid-range jumper and can score with his back to the basket. Has a lot of length. Obtained from Portland (via New Orleans) in a trade for the Grizzlies' second-round pick, Donte Green, F, 6-9, Syracuse.
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER: Rudy Gay emerged as a budding All-Star. A year ago in a shaky rookie season, his outside shot was unsure and he didn't have decisive moves to the basket. He fixed that in the offseason, improving every facet of his game. His scoring average jumped from 10.8 points last year to 20.1 this season, as he became the third Grizzly after Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Pau Gasol to average at least 20. He also set a single-season franchise scoring record for most points with 1,632. He's the first second-year player in three years (LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony in 2004-05) to average 20-plus points.
MOST DISAPPOINTING PLAYER: Free agent Casey Jacobsen was supposed to give the Grizzlies some outside shooting pop. But when he showed he couldn't do that, he was worthless. He can't guard and he can rarely beat anybody off the dribble. Management finally ordered Marc Iavaroni to cut his playing time next-to-nothing.
BIGGEST NEEDS: The Grizzlies still need an inside force who can bang people around and be enough of an inside threat when defenses cheat out toward the perimeter.
The Grizzlies have six players with guaranteed contracts for next season. They are Darko Milicic ($7 million), Mike Conley ($3.6 million), Rudy Gay ($2.57 million), Hakim Warrick ($2.1 million), Kyle Lowry ($1.16 million) and Javaris Crittenton ($1.38 million). Off the books after the trade with Minnesota are Mike Miller ($9 million), Brian Cardinal ($6.3 million) and Jason Collins ($6.2 million).
FREE AGENT FOCUS: Kwame Brown, Aaron McKie, Casey Jacobsen, Andre Brown and Juan Carlos Navarro are free agents. Navarro signed a three-year deal with FC Barcelona.
PLAYER NOTES:
--G-F Mike Miller, before being traded on draft night to Minnesota, received the NBA Community Assist Award for May in recognition of his philanthropic and charitable work. Miller was honored for his recent $200,000 donation to the Grizzlies House at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the largest individual commitment ever made by a Grizzlies player to the hospital. To recognize the contribution, St. Jude will rename The Grizzlies House Fitness Room the Mason and Mavrick Miller Room, after Mike and Jennifer Miller's two young sons."
Also, Miller wasn't selected to the U.S. Olympic team but is an alternate to the 12-man squad, meaning he won't travel to the games in Beijing. The only way Miller can participate is if a player on the squad has an injury that prevents him from performing.
Miller played with the USA National Team last summer in the FIBA games. His role was to provide the Olympic team with outside shooting.
"They said they appreciate everything I've done," Miller said. "I felt like as a team we did what we had to do (last year). At the end of the day, you're dealing with guys you could throw in a hat and pick them out. It's not like I'm shocked. It's an honor to have been a part of it. We had fun."
--G Juan Carlos Navarro won't be back in Memphis. He re-signed with his old Spanish team, FC Barcelona. Navarro, 27, who earned $538,000 with the Grizzlies last season, will make between $20 million and $24 million over the next four years. After playing 10 seasons in Spain, Navarro nearly set a record for 3-pointers made by an NBA rookie last season.
