TORONTO - The Raptors got their top offseason target - thanks to a complex four-team, eight-player swap Thursday and some previous help from Chris Bosh - finalizing the acquisition of Hedo Turkoglu. The 6-foot-10 forward with a shooter's touch hit the market when the Magic acquired Vince Carter from New Jersey. Turko?glu, 30, opted out of his contract and was close to a deal with the Trail Blazers last Friday before Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo swooped in.
Technically, Turkoglu re-signed with the Magic and was traded to Toronto as part of Thursday's large deal. The Raptors also sent Shawn Marion, forward Kris Humphries, center Nathan Jawai and cash to Dallas, and they received swingmen Antoine Wright and Devean George. In addition, Toronto gave Memphis a second-round pick and cash, plus the Raptors gave cash to Orlando. The Grizzlies also got Jerry Stackhouse from Dallas and sent guard Greg Buckner to the Mavericks.
"This is not common," said Lon Babby, Turkoglu's agent. "It's a credit to this organization and their creativity to find a solution."
Turkoglu, a nine-year NBA veteran from Turkey, helped the Magic reach the NBA Finals last season. Babby said Turkoglu and his wife, Banu, were intrigued by Toronto's ethnic diversity, including a large Turkish community. It also helped that Bosh, Toronto's star forward, called Turkoglu last week.
"When I heard his voice, I was really happy about it," said Turkoglu, who gets a five-year deal reportedly worth about $53 million. "He's been an All-Star in this league, and he's been a dominant player. I was just happy to hear I'm welcome by that type of guy; it's really important."
Dallas gets Marion, 31, a four-time All-Star nicknamed "The Matrix" for his do-it-all game, in hopes that he will be a complement to a lineup with Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd and Josh Howard.
For the Grizzlies, Stackhouse, 34, was enticing for his contract numbers. Although he is due more than $7 million next season, he can be bought out for $2 million.
Pistons' Coach official: Cavaliers assistant John Kuester was introduced as Detroit's sixth coach in 10 years, with president of Basketball operations Joe Dumars saying Kuester "might have the most job security of anyone in the NBA." Kuester replaces Michael Curry, fired after going 39-43 in his first season. Kuester has not been a head coach at the pro level. "For the last seven years, the criteria for success here has been making the Finals," Dumars said. "That's not the gun that will be held to John's head."
Cavaliers: Center/forward Anderson Varejao, 26, agreed on a multiyear deal to return. The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that the deal is for six years and worth up to $50 million.
Draft signings: The Clippers signed Oklahoma center Blake Griffin, the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, but no terms were announced. The Knicks signed Florida State guard Toney Douglas, the second of their two players from the first round. The Raptors signed forward DeMar DeRozan, the No. 9 pick, for two years with a team option for the next two.
